An enthusiastic and skilled workforce is critical for any business. It can be difficult to find the perfect fit for your organization when you wade through piles of applications, and even harder to make those decisions in a 15 minute interview. Fortunately, there are tools available in your community that will give you additional objective information on applicants to help make the hiring decision easier.

The Lifelong Learning Center offers several screening tools that can assist you in assessing applicant’s basic skills. Our Adult Basic Education Program works with local employers and service organizations to help screen applicants for employment and/or training by administering the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). The TABE measures an individual’s basic skills in reading, math and writing.

The TABE test cost applicants $25. If applicants do not meet the minimum scores set by the employer, they can take advantage of free brush up classes to increase their skills. Employers who require the TABE test have found that it has been very helpful because employees who are deficient in one or more basic skills sometimes lack the foundation to learn the job related skills required for the position.

Another screening tool available to employers through The Lifelong Learning Center is the Workkeys assessment. The Workkeys program has a wider range of real world business assessments including: Business Writing, Listening, Reading for Information, Applied Technology, Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, Observation and Teamwork. Employers pick only the tests that are applicable to the position and can set a minimum score that applicants must achieve. Additional information on Workkeys can be found at www.act.org/workkeys . Contact Jodie Rasmussen at 549-8765 for more information about the Workkeys assessment.

Utilizing the correct screening tools for new applicants or employee promotions is an easy way to find the best person for your organization. Let us help you determine if employees have the basic skills and aptitude to be successful in the position and reduce costly turnover and overtime hours for your business.

Lifelong Learning is not just taking classes; it’s an attitude; it’s a choice. Your desire and drive to learn will fuel itself and you will be constantly looking for more to feed your hungry mind!
